Joseph F. Ambrose (May 24, 1896 – May 1, 1988) was a prominent World War I veteran, whose 1982 photo has become a symbol of Veterans Day.

Joseph Francis Ambrose was born May 24, 1896〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6DH-FQ3 )〕 in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. His father and mother were Austrian, and lived in a community of many German/Austrian immigrants. His father worked at a steel mill until the age of 63. He had one sister, Anna,〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=79993114 )〕 who lived from 1900-1955. Joseph completed school to 8th grade.
